The Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop computer features a 15.4-inch WXGA and WSXGA+ active-matrix TFT display with a maximum resolution of 1680-by-1050 pixels. As you open and close the computer's display, stress is put on the screws that hold the display on the computer. Eventually, if the screws become too loose, the display will have trouble remaining open. Fortunately accessing the display screws to tighten them requires only a minor tear down of the computer.
* 1
Ensure the computer is turned off. Disconnect anything attached to it. Place it face-down on a table with the front closest to you. Slide the battery-release latch to the left and -- at the same time -- lift the Dell Inspiron 6400 Battery up out of its bay. * 2
Turn the computer over and open the display as far as it will go. Insert a small flat-blade screwdriver into the slot on the right side of the hinge cover and slowly pry it up. Grasp the right side of the hinge cover and lift it up and to the left until you can remove it from the computer. * 3
Remove the two keyboard screws that are revealed when you remove the hinge cover. Lift the Dell Inspiron 6400 Keyboard until you can access its connector. Rotate the connector toward the front of the computer to unlock it and slide the keyboard cable to the rear out of the connector. Remove the keyboard. * 4
Use a small Phillips screwdriver to tighten the screw in each display hinge. Close the cover and rotate the computer so the rear is facing you. Tighten the screws on each side of the rear panel, just below the display hinges. Turn the computer over with the rear facing you and tighten the screw in each rear corner of the case. The display should now be tight. * 5
Turn the over and open the display. Slide the Dell Inspiron 6400 Keyboard cable into its connector and rotate the connector to the rear to lock it. Put the keyboard in place and replace the two screws. * 6
Place the small tab on the left side of the hinge cover into the notch on the case and rotate it down into place. Press around the edges to ensure it snaps to the case. * 7
Close the display, turn the computer over and place the battery back into its bay.
