Electronic Automotive Diagnostic Tools
Permalink

Electronic automotive diagnostic tools are used to identify problems in your vehicle. These tools can generally be used on a wide variety of makes and models.Electronic Car Diagnostic Tools read problem codes from a vehicle's onboard computer system to identify potentially problematic areas for mechanics to check. Most of these tools cannot be used on late-model vehicles because of incompatibility issues.

Wireless Diagnostic Tools

Mechanics can use a wireless handset to access and read codes generated by the onboard computer. These electronic diagnostic tools can be used with additional sensors placed manually at various points on the vehicle. The handsets use sensors to reprogram the onboard computer to reset alerts so that no warning lights go off unnecessarily. A scope attachment can also be used to locate and identify problems in hard-to-access areas, such as the inside of tubing or in some of the inner components of the engine.

Brake Diagnostic

There are some electronic Auto Scanner Tools specific to certain areas of the vehicle; these tools may also be specific to a certain type of operating system. Electronic brake diagnostic tools are specific to certain types of braking systems, although they can be used on any vehicle make or model that has that system. An electronic brake diagnostic tool inspects the brakes for air, and will also clear trouble codes from the onboard computer system. Mechanics can utilize these tools to check brakes after installation or repair for functional errors. These tools should be updated regularly to ensure that they are equipped to read the most recent error codes.

Hybrid Multimeter

Because hybrid vehicles have a different engine system than conventional cars, hybrid-specific electronic automotive diagnostic auto codes may be required to read error codes and assess issues with these vehicles. The hybrid multimeter is an example of such a tool; it allows for both temperature and diagnostic readings. It utilizes sensors that attach to various parts of the vehicle to assess problems. The multimeter takes both digital and analog measurements to help insure accuracy in readings. It can also test for problems with resistance, diodes, and continuity issues in working parts of the vehicle.

Scan Kit

Some mechanics may utilize an electronic diagnostic all-in-one scan kit. These kits provide sensors and cables to check for and diagnose common vehicle problems. Many of them can be used on various makes and models, though they may require additional accessories to be compatible with specific systems. The handset for these kits should be updated frequently to insure accuracy.
