Those little pieces of metal that go on our chain rings make the difference between a good day and a bad. Losing these small, seemingly insignificant pieces of metal leads to endless frustration and can render a multi-thousand dollar automobile to a large paperweight or our trusted homes impenetrable fortresses. These key blanks then get cut into the proprietary tool for locking and unlocking our homes and vehicles.
1 Go to a local locksmith or key-cutting store. Locate these stores via telephone directories or through online searches.
2 Bring a copy of Ford Key Copy Vise that corresponds to the blank you wish. Give the locksmith the key to be duplicated, or, buy the generic blanks to keep on hand. Without a proper key-cutting tool, however, you will not be able to duplicate you key from the blank.
3 Contact your local car dealership where you purchased your car, or the dealership of the brand of car you own. Provide them with your Vehicle Identification Number. The VIN is found on the inside edge of the driver's side door. Ask them to order extra key blanks for your auto. If you have lost your car keys, ask them to cut new keys for your specific vehicle. These are ordered through the dealership with your VIN. You will need to provide proof of ownership, such as a title to get the keys, for safety sake.
4 Order key blanks through online locksmith supply stores.
Tips & Warnings Many newer models of cars have keys with Godiag T300+ inside them designed specifically to start that one car. Keys made from a blank will allow you to get in the car and the trunk, but they won't allow you to start the car. You will need to go to a dealer to pay the extra fee for replacement keys.
